課程概述 |
Course Description:
The second term involves a close reading of a selection of the Moral Letters of Seneca the Younger, the famous first century A.D. Stoic.
|
課程目標 |
Course Objectives:
To increase the ability of Latin 4 students to read Latin prose of the first century A.D. as well as gain some familiarity with the tenets of Stoicism. This is intended to act as a balance to the first term involving the works of Lucretius, a well-known Epicurean poet. We will also turn our attention to Roman society, institutions, and political theory insofar as is necessary to an understanding of the Moral Epistles of Seneca.

課程要求 |
Requirements:
Students will be required to translate one or two letters for each class. Students will also be expected to read widely in order to be able to place Seneca’s Letters into the context of his times and Roman Stoicism. Weekly Assignments will all form part of your grade. Students can miss no more than one such assignment during the term in order to receive a final grade. Under such a system much less emphasis is placed on the mid-term and final examinations.
Weekly Assignments: 80%; Mid-term: 10%; Final: 10%.
